The Muslim community in South Africa is over 300 years old. Islam came to South Africa in the 1600s with the arrival of political exiles and slaves from the East Indies.

The Dutch placaats (statutes) at the time prohibited Muslims from worshipping in public, forcing them to hold secret religious gatherings. The recitation of Dhikr in Cape Town, South Africa, is deeply rooted in this historical context and served to sustain the vulnerable early community.

The recitation of Dhikr and the ceremonies associated with them, albeit that they have undergone elements of change and are devoid of the political context nowadays, remain as steadfast a practice in Cape Town.

Wahied as a young child learned many of the various Dhikr recited in Cape Town while attending different Muslim communal functions. With growing maturity, he showed a desire to capture and preserve the cultural influences and religious practices of Muslims of the Cape.

"My intention is to ensure the tradition and love of riwāyāt (and dhikr) is upheld. When you listen to this recitation, think about where it originates, so that it does not fade away... but remains as a tradition for many more generations to come...."

Salutations and Devotion are not only a testimony to Wahied's talents, but is also evidence of the preservation of a long-established historically embedded practice of the recitation of Dhikr.

Wahied's musical abilities have extended into being a well-known performer of nasheed and qasā’id spanning close onto ten years. Quite capable of performing on his own, he is also the lead vocalist of the Cape Town-based Īmān nasheed group.
