About the Artist

Yunis Casker was exposed to art at an early age. His grandfather was known in the Malay Quarter for his Arabic calligraphy and loghas (rakhams).

With semi-formal art training under tutors such as Katherine Harries of the Michaelis School of Fine Art (UCT), and drawing and design at the South African Academy, Yunis was very much a self-taught artist expecially in the field of air-brush painting. He studied Islamic calligraphy under Sulaiman Nordien and Achmat Fish.

Socio-political events globally and locally in South Africa during the late 1970s and 1980s had a profound effect on the artist causing him to reflect deeply on the role of art and peoples' struggle for liberation from oppression. Yunis saw the need to conscientise people via art and more-and-more his paintings were imbued with a message that was relevant to the political situation in apartheid South Africa. These works are all graphic and rich in symbolism with a strong Islamic identity.

Other aspects of Yunis's art include exquisite rakams, artwork on clothing, covers for magazines, logos, customizing airbrush art on motorcycles, cars and buses. Future plans include starting a school where air-brush painting will be taught.
